Rob Shields, her cohort there, is a very smart academic whose path I nearly crossed at Manchester Institute for Popular Culture, when I worked there a few years back and with which he worked occasionally. He wrote a few things about ‘northern cities’; interesting and influential, particularly in the context of my 1997 article comparing Manchester and Sheffield – Cottonopolis and Culture.
Anyway, check out Space and Culture. It’s excellent.
